trouble uploading video from panasonic HDC-SD5

Hi - I have a Panasonic HDC-SD5 video camera and can't figure out how to upload the video to my MAC (iMovie '09). It seems to recognize the files, but will not allow me to upload. Any help? Thanks!

what format are the files in?

The video camera is an "AVCHD" camera. When I locate the files in iMovie, they are numbered with the prefix ".MPL"

See if you can put the files on your desktop, open them with quicktime then choose file > save as and save in a .avi or .mov format.
