I've been capturing video and making DVD's with my new iMac and my Sony DV camera with no problems and now suddenly iMovie won't let me import anything and when I play the video on the camera the video doesn't show in the window in iMovie.

The only thing I can think of that changed was I ran Software Updater and installed the latest update to Tiger.

Any suggestions on a fix?

Thanks!

Are you plugging the cam into the firewire port directly? Try a repair permissions, reboot, then try it again.

I'm new to Mac... What is a permission and why did repairing it fix my problem?

Every files have a set of permissions given to it when it is created. Sometimes, they get messed up or changed in an update. Repairing permissions, reset the permissions back to the default settings.

As for the permissions themselves, they are using in how you access the files. As in reading the file, being able write to the file and executing (running) the file.
