MPEG2 & apple

Hi all,
I am considering buying an iMac to do mostly video editing but I can't get a clear answer on the following. I have hours and gbs of digital video taken using a Sony Hard Disc Drive camcorder (DCR-SR90E) so it is in MPEG2 format. Does anyone have this camera (or at least video in this format) and is able to edit it with iMovie or Final Cut without going through a conversion?

I would consider file format conversion if there is recommended sofware which will convert files in bulk...recommendations?

Any help appreciated.
