iMovie "Import from Camera" import in mpeg - 2?

Hi,
I am trying to convert some old hi8 tapes to dvd using Imovie and Toast Titanium. Currently, Imovie imports the Hi8 as .dv files and when I try to burn a DVD, Toast has to convert it to a mpeg - 2 file, in which it takes forever. Is there a way to have Imovie import in mpeg-2 rather than a .dv format?

Also, Final Cut Pro imports from my hi8 tapes in a .mov format. Does anybody know if I can change the import format from .mov to .mpeg -2?

No, and you wouldn't want it to. MPEG-2 is highly compressed and bad for editing. DV is a lossless format designed to let you edit the video without quality loss.

The step you are trying to skip is a necessary one. Just do the conversions while you sleep or while you are away from the computer.
