I would like to hook up my mac to my TV and play what's on the TV on my MAC. Ultimately, I want to do video capture of programming I recored on my DVR to post on youtube. I figured this would be the easiest down and dirty way to do it. maybe I'm wrong.

You can get a video capture card, but know you may not be allowed to post to youtube - the reason is broadcast tv many times is not necessarily permitted on youtube unless uploaded by the content providers (ie: NBC, ABC, etc.)

But, you can get an Elgato EyeTV capture device like:

Overview EyeTV Hybrid

or

Elgato Video Capture

and record tv.
