When I import from my (tape) video camera, the picture is distorted. This may be because the camera is quite old and I record in widescreen as an option to best fit my TV. But in Imovie, it squashes the image so that everything is too wide. Does anyone know how I can correct this please?

An old video camera set to "widescreen" is not really recording in widescreen -- it's just cutting off the top and bottom of the 4:3 picture, thus reducing resolution.

So, first thing, stop doing that.

Second, in iMovie you are asked at the start of a new import if the video is 4:3 or 16:9. You are probably choosing 16:9, which would be wrong. Since what you actually have is 4:3 with black bars on the top and bottom, try choosing 4:3.
