Uploading video from Sony camcorder to iMovie.

This is my first time posting on this forum so if I didn't do things right just let me know.

I bought a Macbook Pro and my fiance has a Sony camcorder (DCR-SR47). I was told by some people that sony won't recognize mac and told by others I would need a firewire. Anyone have any idea how to upload videos from her camcorder to iMovie? Thanks.
