Burning to DVD from HD DVR

So I transferred a tv show from my HD DVR to my Mac and its file extension is ".m2t". I was told that you can edit/play ".m2t" files, and I would assume .MPEG files as well with MPEG Streamclip. But it won't play or edit either type of file. I did convert the original .m2t file to MPEG with MPEG Streamclip though.

What I wanted to know was if there was a free program that I could download that allows me to edit those file types, where I can cut out the commercials and stuff like that. And also to make it smaller, so that the file size isn't so big. I would like to burn it onto a DVD and watch it on an Standard Definition TV. Right now the file is over 20GB.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Try the "Export to QuickTime..." using the "Apple Intermediate Codec" or "Export to DV..." options of MPEG Streamclip and edit that in iMovie, or what ever.
