How would I record a video clip off a DIVX?

I tried iMovie, but had no luck. The DIVX would not load.

Let me rephrase this. I have a video file that I want to take a clip from. What program would I use?

I don't do that sort of thing - but the first question anyone that can help you is going to ask will be - "What file type is the video?"
