can't view an .avi file

alright so all i want to do is view an .avi file on my mac! shouldn't be too hard, right? but i can not for the life of me figure it out, someone please help. oh, and i know there's something out there that will let me do it for free

What version of OSX are you running?

Try installing Perian. It allows Quicktime to play most video files.
