VLC stopped working... any ideas or alternatives?

I recently started having a problem with playing DVDs on my MacBook, as I was previously using VLC for watching DVDs and movile files. I removed VLC and reinstalled the version from the VLC web site. DVDs play fine again, however any downloaded video files are very jumpy and pixelated in places. I have gone back to using the Apple DVD player for DVD and Quicktime for downloaded stuff. Files ar eno longer pixelated in Quicktime, however the video is not smooth - almost jumpy, but watchable.
Anyone got any ideas what caused this? Would prefer to be back with VLC as it was smoother to watch, but the current version was pretty poor from what I saw.
