Questions about movie

I searched, and I found one similar thread, but nobody responded. I want to take funny clips from some movies (DVD's) that I own, some videos from my camera, and so one. What program or programs do I need to perform this task? I already have the video file converter. Thanks for your help.

I use iMovie for making video films.

If your camera footage is in MPG1 format, you'll need to convert it to MPG4 before importing to iMovie to prevent complete loss of audio. To do this I use MPEG Streamclip - it's free.
Squared 5 - MPEG Streamclip video converter for Mac OS X

With MPG1 format, the video & audio is interleaved [muxted], MPEG Streamclip de-muxes the format, separating the video and audio so that the footage imports correctly into iMovie.

Sony MPG1 files have the ending.MPG, to confirm this, open the video clip in Quicktime, scroll down from "Window" to "Show Movie Properties".

I am unable to help with commercially produced DVDs.
