    FCE4 output options
    Hello
I am a very happy mac switcher and am just trying to decide whether to get FCE4 or FCS2. I will be shooting HDV and want to have the option to output uncompressed HDV short films back to tape. What I can't work out from all the info online, is if I'll be able to do this using FCE4. I would appreciate any advice.

    Thanks!

The FCE specs say: "Print to Video command for recording a sequence or clip back to DV or HDV device".

What I don't understand is why you say "uncompressed HDV". HDV is a compressed format.

Hi xstep, thanks for your reply.

Sorry, I didn't word my Q very well - I knew that HDV is already compressed - I just wanted to be sure that the "print to video" wording on the FCE spec means that I can use FCE to output high quality HD footage, which is not the same as just being able to output, say SD, to an HDV device.

Also, could you clear another question up for me? Does FCE actually edit the native HD footage or does it put it through some kind of codec even to just capture the footage. And would FCP 6 edit the HD footage natively?

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.

My understanding is that FCE (and iMovie) converts HDV to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) upon import and FCP 6 can edit HDV natively. I was made aware of this on another site.
