Some of my *.avi files play sound only and show a black screen with nothing visual.

Is there an "add on" that I need that will allow me to view as well as hear the movies?

I have already installed codec and xVid with no results.

I am using an intel iMac, OS 10.4... and Quicktime player (non-pro version).

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Try downloading and installing VLC, it plays just about anything.

Sounds like a case of missing codecs. Download and install Perian, should solve your problem.

I did not try VLC, but I DID install Perian and all of the avi's that were not playing now play perfectly.

Thanks!

QuickTime Player isn't really the best way to enjoy AVI or MKV movies. For starters 720p files will always run choppily on QuickTime Player if you don't wait for it to finish buffering. VLC or MPlayer are a lot more efficient and they're free.
