Backin up some of my DVDs (yes, I own them). I used Mac The Ripper to rip them. What freeware should I use to burn them? A few are in the 7 and 8GB zone, so I need to compress them down. What should I use? My friend uses Toast, but it seems to be paid software.

Sorry, discussion of commercial DVD ripping is prohibited here. Even if you own the discs, defeating the encryption is still in violation of US Law.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!
