None playing video attachments

Hi peep's
I'm new to Mac's and I am having a little trouble playing video clips .wmv and .avi file on web sites and emails, when I click on the link/attachment it opens a new window as if it is about to play but then it just fill's with letters and symbols. Do I need to down load a plug in of some kind to allow me to click on these video files and play them.

WMV requires Flip4Mac

Also download and install Perian
