I finally bought my long awaited 80gb iPod Classic today - managed to get a discount through a friend who works at JB Hi-Fi, so I'm happy. Very impressed with the packaging, it felt nice, it looked nice, it made me feel like I spent a lot of money. Nice work Apple.

However... There was something in it I just couldn't figure out. What is this thing?!

Assuming this is a genuine question . . . . .

It's a dock adaptor. It's shaped to fit your particular model of ipod.

If you get a device that has an ipod connector it will have a recess to fit this adaptor so that your ipod fits correctly.

That is a Dock Adapter of some kind to make your new iPod fit into a certain dock. Looks like what came with the iPod HiFi that they discontinued.

Oh ok... thanks! =) Makes sense I guess. I thought that might be it but I wasn't sure, plus there was nothing in the box that listed everything that came in it.
