Constantly freezing and not recognized by computer

My iPod has been pretty dead since few months ago. It freezes constantly and I can never reboot from the crash. The only way I can stop it is to let the battery drain so that it'll turn off. Now, there's an ever bigger problem. Whenever I try to charge my iPod, it freezes at the loading screen, where it is the Apple logo against the black background. I've read solutions to this, such as holding down the middle and bottom button so that it'll format the iPod, but it still doesn't work. Help, I really dont wanna waste more money to get a new iPod. It's only more that a year and outta warranty already.
