I'm buying a white 30gb video on ebay. Some sellers don't specify if it's 5th or 5.5 Gen... some get confused when I ask about a search feature or brighter screen, so..

What's a very easy, fool-proof that sellers can determine the difference? Is there something written on the outside (by the serial number)? Or something like and "about this ipod" in the menu or something..?

here is how.

Fifth Gen iPod:
http://support.apple.com/specs/ipod/..._30_60_GB.html

gives you the model numbers

Fifth .5 Gen iPod:
http://support.apple.com/specs/ipod/...Late_2006.html

no model numbers are listed but i think that they are different.

Is the model number on the back (mirror side) of the iPod?

If you are going to buy a new one in the box, the new 5.5 models have a Pirates of the Caribbean image with the Red Hot Chili Peppers album on the other side. The gen 5 iPods have the U2 guy and I forget what else on the other.

Just have them look at the last 3 digits of the serial number on the back of the case. Refer to this link to verify whether its 5.5 or 5 gen.
