iPod - How do I change the bit rate for music?

Can I change the bit rate for music files before they get sync'd to the iPod from iTunes?

Yes you can. By going to the iTunes settings and changing the import settings to what you wish to use. Then right click on files in the library and select "Convert to...".

However, converting low bit rate files to higher bit rate files will not increase quality. It can actually decrease quality.
