Running with the HDD based iPods is a skipfest anyway, so it makes sense that it only work with the flash based nano.

Only nano, as explained running with a HDD based iPod will cause it to skip and could result in data corruption if the read head smacks into the disc.

how come this is does not work with iphones. Arent they flash memory based?
