Torrents are illegal and can be traced. Pirate Bay is the most popular and is out of Swedan but legal action has been taken against them already and their US vistors. Yes, they have been raided by the government but because Swedan doesn't have copyright laws nothing was able to be done about it. Except the US can prosecute US downloaders.

Not all torrents are illegal. Most Linux distros are distributed over torrents. I've downloaded numerous legal items over torrents.

Yes, not ALL are illegal but MOST nearly all are. Shareware and public domian files and software are legal to download because the purpose of them is for sharing. But, i believe he or she is refering to music and other intellectual property which is copyright thus makes it illegal.

It also depends on where you are. In Canada it is not illegal to download this material but it is illegal to upload. Ethical concerns are another matter. I prefer to purchase my music through itunes or emusic.com I do however download the occasional Television episode that I am unable to catch only because Itunes hasn't opened TV episode purchases yet here in Canada.

Download Azureus and visit http://www.torrentscan.com Type a word into the box and choose a torrent site.

Bittorrenting is not illegal, but downloading copyrighted software and films are.

On the other hand, if you missed a TV program the other night, would it be a heinous crime to download and watch it?

I dont think it would be if you downloaded a copy with the adverts in it. I know technically it is, but thats because TV companies are scared of the internet.

Whats the difference between watching tv on your computer to watching it on a tv ?

Well id you want to stick it to the man...you can do what I do. I have the Zune Marketplace and bought a 3 month subscription and in those 3 months I download everything you can think of. But, the catch is that with the downloading and subscription is that inorder to beable to play or burn the music you must keep up the subspcription.....well, because it downloads a copyrighted wma file...I got a software that dubs each file into an uncopyrighted mp3. Because legally you can make one copy of a copyrighted work so dubbing the file is protected under that law. Take that bill gates
