Ipod for Newbie questions.

Ok. So I broke down and got an 30GB Ipod since it was 60 dollars cheaper than 6 months ago.
I have couple questions though. I start transferring songs from my CDs on my desktop to the ipod and everything works fine. Now, I can't seem to figure out how to transfer the songs from my laptop to the player. I hit sync and it said complete and I don't see any songs on the player. Or it can't be done. I have to do it on one PC only?
What if I'm at my friend's house and want to transfer his CD to it. No can do?
