ipod shuffle flashing

My fiancé's sister's shuffle has this problem where it won't update in iTunes and it flashes these alternating lights on the front. Bizarre. A search didn't really yield anything. Anyone?

Does the iPod software updater or disk utility recognise it?

If not you might be out of luck...
