When I got my new iPod video I saw the "sleep" otion and thought great, I can finally set a sleep timer and fall asleep to music. Sadly it appears to just be a slower way of holding down the play button to turn that darn thing off.

No, it actually turns the iPod off after playing a set number of minutes.

Set 'sleep 15' for example and start playing a playlist...

You should see a little clock icon with the number 15 over it in the playing window...

That timer will count down and shut off the iPod after 15 minutes, just like you guessed.

the sleep timer in the extras should turn the ipod off after the amount of time selected, is that not what you thought it would do?

Ok...this is insane what you two are describing is exactly what I though it would do...I don't see sleep timer option in extra's. I see stopwatch?

You see, I figured when you hit Sleep it would take you to a sub menu where you could select when you wanted it to sleep. My just turns off instantly.

This is like the Twighlight Zone...

I just checked my iPod Video, and there is no sleep in the extras menu. It's been moved to the main menu and is off by default. But selecting it doesn't lead to a place where you can set a timer, instead it just shuts off the ipod immediately.

To actually use a sleep time with the new video iPods, I got this out of the manual:
To set the sleep timer:
1 Choose Extras > Clock and then choose a clock.
2 Choose Sleep Timer and choose how long you want iPod to play.
When you set the sleep timer, a clock icon and the number of minutes left until iPod
turns off appear in the Now Playing screen on iPod.

if you want to remove the Sleep option from the main menu, in case you haven't discovered it yet, if you go into Settings->Main Menu you can customize it by turning the options on and off.

I've actually had my video iPod since december and just thought they just took out the sleep option until your thread made me decide to look it up.

I still have no idea what the point of the other sleep option is though.

Thanks for the help, 've put the Clock back into the main menu so it's easier to get access to. I'll be using the sleep timer a lot. I posted my reply before I saw your "manual" post by the way but it still fits anyway lol.

Ah okay, there are actually 2 sleep menu items:

The one is a shortcut for those too impatient to press play/pause for 3 seconds to turn the iPod off.

The other is a sub-menu of the clock menu and has the sleep-timer function.

Phew, glad we got that one straightened out!
