Will iTunes only work with iPod?

I am looking at getting an MP3 player and was wondering whether iTunes will only work with the iPod, or will it work with most other makes?
(Bit of a newbie to this MP3 lark!!)

what kind of mp3 player are you getting? there are several compatible plug ins for itunes...what are u gettting?

You can find Doug's Applescripts by googling it. Check it out; you can add a lot of functionality to iTunes if you want it.

I have an old Rio 600 that I've had for years. It still works with iTunes. Then again, it was designed to work with SoundJam MP, which was iTunes before it was iTunes.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I have now bought an iPod Mini 4Gb off ebay. Plenty of storage space for what I need and no worry about it being compatible with iTunes.
