i dont want to get another external hard drive if i get the 30g ipod which seems will do fine.

the ipod makes a great storage device. newer ipods only come with usb chipsets containing usb 1.1 and usb 2, so the machine you are on may give slower than expected transfer speed if you only have usb 1.1, also depends on the file size. though even usb isn't too slow.

no, you would think maybe a usb 2 to firewire adapter, but no such thing exists. though the thing that REALLY ticks me off is that it can charge via firewire.

just a point...what will you be doing on the hard drive? it may get overheated for what you're doing and ruin the ipod...

thats a very small possibility, the ipod would have to sit in a warm room copying a huge file for hours to get anywhere near that. I also recommend that you keep it mounted as long as you are using the mac so you can copy files without cconstantly or repeatedly mounting and unmounting.

You'll get alot more gig per dollar value with another external HD than with the ipod.
