Welcome to Mac-Forums..

Sync them to your iPod like regular music. Put them into a playlist and go..

You need to import them into iTunes.
Once there, if they're not recognized as an audiobook
right click on the file - select Get Info
go to the Options tab and in the drop down for 'Media Kind' select Audiobook.

Have you tried dragging and dropping them direct from your Mac to the iPod without going through iTunes?

Need to tell us what is happening - not just that it doesn't work.

What happens when you drag the file into iTunes or onto the iTunes icon in the Dock?

If you drag an mp3 into the iPod - it is going to be in the Music category unless you have changed the type to audiobook within iTunes.

"What happens when you drag the file into iTunes or onto the iTunes icon in the Dock?"

The word iTunes appears above the iTunes icon, then disappears after I let go of the file.

"If you drag an mp3 into the iPod - it is going to be in the Music category unless you have changed the type to audiobook within iTunes."

I have done a search in the Music category; no joy. Also scrolled through the Artist, Playlist & Album lists.

When I dragged the mp3 file onto the iPod icon on the desktop, it copied across. The file appears next to folders called; Calendars, Contacts, DCIM, Notes, Recordings. When I disconnect the iPod from the mac, I can't find the mp3 file anywhere on the iPod.

I think you need to give this a go . . . Turn off 'show all' in the Music App (Via settings on iDevice); and turn on 'manually sync Music and AudioBooks' in the summary Tab in iTunes, when your iDevice is connected, then sync again, and they should be there . . .
