Video Ipod freezing on Apple black background

My new Ipod 60g video won't start up past the apple screen. I try to reset it with the commands but to no avail. I can feel the hard drive moving but I dont know? Is my Ipod dead?

and you've already held the center + play/pause button simultaneously for several seconds? Mine did that after the initial charge but eventually turned off. I started it again with no problem

set your ipod video into disk mode check it out on the apple support website.
