I was told that my ipod classic will play AIFF files.
When I try, the ipod hangs up and I have to restore it.
It's a great device and if it doesn't play AIFF that's OK.
I just want to know if this is unique issue.

Don't know about earlier versions, but Apple's tech specs say the current iPod Classic will play AIFF files. What version of iTunes are you using, and which iPod Classic do you have?

Your iPod Classic should play AIFF files, but iTunes is up to version 11. Check what you have installed on your computer. I think you checked the iPod firmware.

I tried both. I have the newest version of itunes for mac and restored the ipod to factory settings.
So I'll just avoid that format until I can drop the pod off at a apple dealer.

That's what I do, but I'm a statistical outlier. I have more than 31,000 music tracks in my iTunes library, so I copy my tracks to the iPod at 128 Kbs. Good enough for road trips, especially considering I can carry my entire music collection with me.

At home I listen to the full-fidelity tracks through my Apple TV connected to my Sony ES preamplifier's DAC feeding a Carver 225 wpc amplifier driving a pair of DCM TF-7 speakers.

Sometimes I really get tired of my son telling me to turn down my stereo.

Success! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
Since you said it should work I kept trying different options.
What finally worked was;
1.Totally restore the ipod.
2. Deselect everything until the ipod was empty.
3.Then reinstall the files.
Now the AIFF files play fine.
They take up a ton of space and you can't tell the difference
except on high end gear
but they sound wonderful.

Glad you figured it out. I was puzzled why it wasn't working, but it sounds like there was something corrupted on your iPod and the restore/delete wiped it out.

Yep, AIFF files take a lot of space but they do sound great on high-end gear. I doubt I'd notice the difference between 128 kbps and AIFF files while on road trips in my F150. I like having my entire collection with me while on the road. At home I stream from my computer to the Apple TV, which is connected to one of the digital inputs on my preamp. Even my audiophile friends are impressed with the sound.

Have fun with your newly restored iPod.
