The media itself may be rated for that, but the app is what's producing a coaster. The burn engine in iTunes is pretty rudimentary and I've gotten buffer overflow errors before, too. Also, when you burn a CD, close all non-essential apps. This may help free up CPU cycles and RAM cache.
