i work as a DJ and keep all my music on an external harddrive. i do however keep everything organized in iTunes. problem is that whenever music goes into itunes the program makes a copy to go in the organized music folder. as i have thousands of songs to deal with, this ends up consuming most of my harddrive space. how can i keep iTunes from doing this. i more or less just want iTunes to play everything off the external, and with some exceptions, not keep any files on my powerbook. ???

In iTunes, go to Prefs., the Advanced tab, then to General. Now click on Change to choose a different directory. You also might want to uncheck "Keep iTunes music folder organized", because I'm sure you got everything organized the way you need it being a DJ and all, and the last thing you need is iTunes reorganizing your whole collection, if it's an issue.
