iPod Shuffle does not show up in iTunes when connected to my computer

I broke my iPod dock and bought a USB cable to connect my iPod to my iTunes (I have updated to the latest version). It does not show up in iTunes. Do I have to get another dock? My question is a dock different than a cable?

How, exactly, are you connecting this "USB cable" to your iPod Shuffle, since the iPod Shuffle doesn't have a dock connector nor a USB port?
