trouble transferring .mov files to iPod

I feel I have done this in the past. Am I remembering something different? Can one transfer .mov files from a MBP to an iPod? What are my steps please?

1. "Mov files" could mean a lot of different things, so not all things labeled ".mov" may work. That said:

2. Drag the video file into iTunes. If it understands it, it will add it to its collection.

3. Connect the (video) iPod. Go to the videos tab. Check the movies you want synced.

4. Sync.
