I am onsidering buying an iPod Touch 4, but want to make sure I can use it with SKYPE. I have heard that FACETIME is similar to SKYPE, but can only be used with others who have FACETIME. No one I know does. Also does the Touch have a built in microphone or do I have to buy one.

The iPod touch has a microphone and a modest internal speaker. And yes Skype will work on it.

You can talk and send messages, but you can not video call or video chat on your iPod Touch 4 Gen. The application is crippled, allegedly, by an agreement between Apple and Skype for the first year of Facetime.

Thank you for your responses.

What's the possibility of gen 5 having the video capability. Does anyone know when it is due out?

If you go by their previous track record, it'll probably be around mid 2011.

iPods are "traditionally" updated in early September -- not sure I'd call that "mid" 2011 ...

Well, it's not the iPod Touch 4 Gen that needs to be upgraded. It is now equipped for users to be able to video chat easily, so the hardware is not the problem. The problem is the application itself. Skype needs to incorporate and enable it's video chat features for the iPod Touch 4Gen. The hardware should work flawlessly, as it does for Facetime.

Wolfsbane, as I understand what you are saying, if I buy the Touch 4 now it has what is needed for skype video. I just have to wait for skype to come around.

Skype has indicated that they are interested in licensing FaceTime -- or they may come up with their own solution. Either way, it should happen soon enough.

Correct. Basically, you are not waiting for the hardware to be able to support video chat. Its already there. You are waiting for Skype, (and MSN), to incorporate the software and codex to enable this feature. Rumors have been running around about these companies finally supporting video chat for awhile, specially with MSN and Adium. But unfortunately, it has not happened yet. And I think that since Apple introduced Facetime, companies like Skype don't want to do anything that seems like they are stepping on Apple's toes.

I think that Apple is slowly working at making Facetime a multi platform application. At one time, you could only use Facetime for video chatting if both parties had an iPhone or an iPod Touch 4G. Now Apple is pushing out the beta app for Facetime on Macs. IMO, it wont be long before it is also offered for Windows based systems. I think they are just trying to figure out how to market it. For example, how to convince users to sign up for an Apple Store account...
