Itouch Gen4 Problem with sync

I just bought an itouch gen4 and I am unable sync it to my itunes. The device does not show up in itunes but does show up in my iphoto program. what do I need to do to have itunes also regognize my itouch?
Also the drop down menu where I can sync is greyed out

Try updating iTunes... or manually install the drivers for the iPod or actually just update them... sometimes by updating your operating system.

Yes you need the newest copy of iTunes (10) to run the 4g.
