I was reading an article on Forbes as they talk about BMG and EMI's copy protection on new CD's and how they won't work with iTunes.

In reading the article, I was wondering how others are reacting to this? Personally, I have always been a fan of purchasing the actual CD's and then importing them into iTunes over purchasing the music from apple. Mainly because I will have a backup of the music incase anything was to happen, and also, I can import them at a higher quality than apple offers. These new copy protected CD's have me re-thinking this. I first ran into this when I went to purchase the new Dave Matthews CD and started reading the label about the CP, I ended up not buying the CD.

These moves from the Record Labels are pushing me more to support iTunes Music Store than anything, and in my opinion will only hurt resellers of the CD’s. I am not willing to worry if the CD that I just purchased will/will not work with iTunes. Also I’m far too lazy to have to rip and burn the CD 5 times in different formats just to get the music in iTunes. I just want to put it in and go.

Does this mean, I feel that Apple should License it’s Fair Play software? I really don’t have an opinion on that. I’m sure there are definitely benefits to Apple keeping it’s software to themselves and I’m sure there are also benefits to having it become almost an industry standard.

But for now, it looks like I am going to be purchasing a lot less music for my iPod, and all of that will be from iTunes.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
Ray

I think its a stupid move to make, its not going to stop people being able to download from P2P and its just going to encourage people to shop elsewhere such as the iTunes store. With the enormous growth of MP3 players and their versatilely, theres no way people are going to continue buying CD's if they can't have them on their MP3 player.

I have always supported buying CDs, if I like an album enough I will happily pay to have it in my collection, not only that but there is no way you can beat having the original jewle case and booklet (some cases and booklets I would consider works of art). But at the end of the day, if I cant have the CD on my iPod I'll be going else where.

I will still buy CDs, even it has copy protection on it. There's always a way around it. If I purchased that CD then I should be able to put it on any device that I own as long as I am not sharing it with the world. Does anybody remember tape sharing? Apparently some of the bands that could never get airplay once upon a time forgot this method. The music industry is still around and those bands have a larger following.

I got one other solution for ya...optical digital output going straight to optical digital input on a SB Live! Platinum setup...I can record whatever I want...as long as the dang thing plays in a CD player...it'll be recorded anytime I feel like it.

Will sound as good as if you imported it standard, but will not if you have it to import at the highest kbps... plus that is alot of extra work.

That's a good idea but I'm far too lazy to do that. I just want to insert my CD, pull the Track info from whatever database itunes uses, and rip it to my Hard Drive at 192Kbps AAC. If it requires more effort than that, it's off to iTMS I go or live without the CD, and living without the CD is basically what I will be doing. There are very few CD's that I just couldn't live without.

Also, in the article, they were hinting that it was Apples fault b/c they don't license the Fair Play software. Apple's fault?!?! I call B.S. on that one, The music industry just needs to develop of better CD Protection or give up the battle.

Thanks,
Ray

Once again the music industry shoots themselves in the foot. Oh well... I prefer to use iTunes anyways.

I have a couple of CD's with the copy protection and none of them have stopped me from importing into iTunes. The DMB CD was a little slower than normal cd's but it still imported without me doing a thing

I have yet to run across a CD with Copy Protection. If I did though I would try and bypass and if I can't easily I would return it and see if I could pick it up off iTunes (then jhymn it). I do not P2P, I feel it would be disingenuous since I expect people to pay for the work I do as well. On the other hand I store all my music on my computer then throw the CD into a CD book, never to be pulled out again so a cripled CD has no value to me.

I have been folllow this copyright stuff and the thing that ticks me off is the fact that the music companies want to consider all of us criminals right off the bat. I abandoned my nomad jukebox for the ipod because of window media player's DRMs. If they go any further I will simply stop buying music. No cd and no itunes. I will search out indi bands to get my fix.
