iPod - 80GB classic stops syncing

Mac Specs: MacBook 2ghz,1 GB, 250 gig

At around 18 GB my Itunes tells me that the Ipod can not be writen to or read from. It stops syncing at around 15 gig. warranty has run out. has anyone had this problem. I have updated itunes and restored factory settings ,but no luck.
