Lately, songs have been playing only for the first few seconds and then the sound mutes completely. It only happens with some songs and the song choice is random every time. Sometimes, turning the iPod off and then back on does it, but not always. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try restoring the iPod from iTunes. That might clear up whatever issues you are having.
