Right now, if you jailbreak it there is an IM app that supports AIM, MSN, etc. If you wait a week or so, the SDK will be out and an AIM app will be available. There is a rumor of a 2.0 firmware update coinciding with the SDK that adds iChat support.

So regardless of which method you choose, there is or will be an IM app for you to use.

So then you would choose to jailbreak and use the offered IM client, at least until an easy path to upgrade firmware comes into place.
