iPhone - Help, Password unlock screen not working.

I've had my iPhone for a few months now...
I have a passcode set to unlock the phone.
I slide to unlock, then the "Enter Passcode" screen comes up like normal but when I go to put in my password, the dots don't show up in the white boxes and nothing is happening.
They keys turn blue under my finger tips, but the password isn't entered.
I also can't turn the phone off.
Anyone got any ideas?

hold down the home button and the sleep button until it resets. this will probably fix the problem

I swear I thought I had already tried resetting it but it wouldn't reset.

no problem. remember when in trouble try resetting.
