iPhone - Question on buying the iPhone in Hawaii

I'm off to Hawaii next week and as we can't buy the phone in OZ just yet I was thinking if you can buy one out right in Hawaii with out being signed up to a carrier.
Can you just walk in and buy one? Is there away around it?

I have people that can coughfixcough it for our networks here.

yeah you have to purchase with a credit or debit card now. Just go buy a prepaid one and buy it on that
