iPhone - Gmail gets IMAP - what does this mean?

I read on another iPhone site that gmail now has IMAP support, but I don't know what that means. Here is a link about how to set it up on the iPhone. If I change my settings to IMAP, how will it be different on the phone?

It means that you can set up Gmail such that when you access it, the emails stay on the server. You can see them from the iPhone, and any changes you make to them or your mailboxes stay on the server itself, not on the phone. This means that you see the same image of the mailbox from ANY accessing device, be it iPhone, Mac, PC, Web, etc. If you access the same mailbox from many places, IMAP is a really elegant solution.

So...for example if I delete an email using Mail.app, it will delete from the iPhone as well, and vice versa?

Exactly. If you delete a particular email from any location, it will be deleted on all computers and devices that you use to access that particular account. It's really useful.

That's really cool, except there's no option in my gmail settings to enable IMAP...but gmail's website says you can, so I'm a bit confused.

From what I was reading, the option is only currently available to a select few accounts. It'll be a little while before this option is available to everyone.

Did you follow the directions in the link you posted? You can't edit an existing Gmail account on your iPhone, you have to make a new, custom account.

Yeah, there's no option in my gmail account settings to enable IMAP, only POP, so it just hasn't been added for me yet. I'll just use POP until it enables for me, still great news.

gmail IMAP support = free 4GB net drive! Just store your files as attachments to emails in a Drafts folder.

Because it's slowly being rolled out. Google does this with most new features for its various services.

I just checked my account settings and I have the option.

You're checking online and not on your phone, right?
