iPhone - Switching Number To Another Plan

Right now I am on a family talk plan with Cingular/AT&T. I want to buy an iPhone and get my own plan. Can I move my number off the family talk to my own plan? Has anyone done this?

I upgraded one of the family talk lines to the iphone, they just changed it to the primary line added $20 for the data plan.
