Is there one great IRC client that would allow an iPhone user to IRC with an Android user? Maybe the same mobile app that can be used on both phones? Or just a great iPhone IRC app that would communicate with a common Android app using different apps.

There are several IRC clients for both platforms. The IRC protocol is platform independent so there's no need or desire for the clients to be the same.

You're best just hitting the app store and looking for an IRC client you like. I use Colloquy but there are many to choose from

I used IM+ on my iPhone for IRC with people using their PCs; worked well.
