Iphone text message sound changes to quiet

On my 4S when I get a text message it makes the normal sound but then if I get additional texts from that person within a short time the sound is different and quiet. This has caused me to miss the texts. Can I turn this feature off and get the same text sound all the time?

The only way to get the " normal " text tone back is to either quit the messages app when done reading the text or simply lock the phone.
