iPhone and iMessage quandary

My wife an I share the same iTunes account with all of our iPads/computers/and iPhones connected to that acount so that we have access to the same iCloud account. I recently received my iPhone and in trying to sent up my gmail account in places like iMessage and FaceTime etc it will not verify this email account and will only maintain our iTunes account email. What do we need to do to fix this or do I need to open my own iTunes account just for these type of reasons?

I think an iCloud account (not a new iTunes account) would be the right way to go with this.

yea, simply having an apple ID does NOT mean you have to use it in iTunes.mike
