Try shutting the iPhone completely down (turn it off, not just the sleep button). Then power it back up. See if that helps.

well, being an iphone 3g user myself, you can get all of those "bad" features by jailbreaking the phone. it's fairly simple, and legal.

I ended up having to do a 'restore' and then 'new iPhone user' to correct this problem. Thanks for the replies!
