I'm planning to purchase the iPhone 4S sometime soon. I was leaning toward the
16gb model for budget purposes, however a recent review from a very legitimate
source stated the 4S operating system is a resource hog, taking up a good 7 gigs
of space, so to absolutely go with at least the 32gb model. I wasn't planning to
do this.

This will be my first iPhone, coming over from a Blackberry, so I wanted to get
some opinions from knowledgeable Apple afficianados if the 16gb capacity would
suffice. I don't really plan to keep a lot of music or videos on the phone -
mainly using it as a phone, surfing the web, for some game and information apps
and storing some photos.

Your source may be incorrect. I have an iPhone 4 (not 4S) running iOS 5, and it reports a capacity of 13.73GB out of 16GB, therefore meaning that the OS takes up 2.27GB.

Now, of course, I don't have Siri on this thing, but I can't see how that could take up an extra 5GB, so I'm inclined to disbelieve it.

I now have a 4S and the capacity is the same as Chas's device.

16 gig phone 13.73gb free.

Thanks so much. I guess the info I read was incorrect. Given that, do you think 16gb is enough for lots of apps, some photos but not much video or music? I'm tempted to get the 16gb for cost purposes, but don't want to make the mistake of running out of room.

I have a 100+ apps 9gb + of music no video and a handful of photos on mine.

I still have 2.5gb free.

Are you concerned about having all your music on your phone as with video this will take up the most space.

The capacity was the same on my 4.

I updated the software on Friday before the 4S was delivered and before it restored the content the space specs where exactly the same.

Unless the Ipad 2 does something I am unaware of when using 5.0 then I would image the space would be the same.

I've got the 16GB 4S - it's fine for me, but I do regularly sync music on / off.
