Visit the mobile YouTube site through Safari. That supports HD video playback and works quite well. The native YouTube app does not.
You can rent and buy HD movies from the device with a caveat. The HD movie won't download on the device. If the movie comes in both a SD and HD version in the same package the SD will download to the device over WiFi only. You have to utilize a desktop or laptop to complete all HD download purchases.
